My Many Thoughts about Learn and Play

This program was very beneficial to my staff as well as myself. I have learned many new things. I, believe it or not, was able to get in contact with some extended family of mine with the use of FACEBOOK. Relationships have been renewed. I would say that TWITTER is the most used site. I am addicted to reading what is going on with the people I "follow" and I enjoy being "followed". I also enjoy getting daily news updates thru RSS feeds as well as TWITTER. I can see how using WIKI at work could be a useful way to get information out to staff. We, as a staff, have enjoyed ompleting Learn and Play together. I am (we are)so lucky to have such a fun job and to work for the number one library in the country. (and I'm not just saying that..)

**If I get chosen to win one the many wonderful prizes, please throw my entry back in and draw someone else. I would love to see some support staff person win and not "management".. I didn't need to be offered the possibility of a prize to participate. IT WAS FUN all on it's own.**

MOLDI

Wow.. 26 years ago when I first started working in libraries..microfilm was the new thing! Who would have thought it would come to this? EBooks.. I can totally see downloading a book to read. On Oprah, I learned about a device you can download your ebooks on and read. With the use of MOLDI, this would be a FREE option for me.

Jane Stop This Crazy Thing!

Podcasts

I did not find podfeed.net all that helpful..however, Podcastalley.com was cool! It started with the top 10 podcasts listed along the right hand side which peaked my interest. I did end up finding something useful. The top 10 Christmas present ideas which I downloaded to my Bloglines account pretty easily.

I Stumbled Upon it!

Wow.. I certainly got my "Playing" in today. I loved the tool Stumble Upon. I clicked on SmittenKitchen.com which led me to an old recipe of my husband polish ancestors that I have always wanted to master..Pierogi!! I think I will actually surprise him and try to make them for Christmas. ..in this process I also found a site called CookingforEngineers.com. Way cool.. complete with a list of great cookbooks for Christmas ideas. Oh, and did I mention that SmittenKitchen has a quick and dirty list of conversion charts for cooking.. YIPPIE! I'm lovin it.

Im Cooked..!!

I really enjoyed PLAYING with the 2.0 Award Winning sites.. Im Cooked was my favorite site. I got to watch someone make cabbage rolls. There many other sites I want to go back and explore when I have more time.

Wiki Tiki Tavi

Rikki Tikki Tavi..no WIKI.. Anyway, I have never thought of Wikis as an authoritative place to go for information however, I am always curious to see what I might find there. I see that some libraries are using wikis as a way to set up online reference information. This is a clever idea for those who do not have as wonderful of a website as the #1 library in the country ;-)

Library 2.0

Last winter I decided I wanted to know everything I could about Web 2.0 so I looked articles to share with the staff. I found a very basic article in LJ, copied and shared it with the staff and then made a point of discussing it with my staff..on a one to one basis. I now understand why the library is leading toward this type of learning as it is the future. Social networking is here and now and is not going away. Some who have been resisting "technology" for so long can no longer get by with that attitude. Helene Blowers and her team certainly have their work cut out for them. I do think that doing the "23 things" is a great way to start.

yum yum delicio

Well.. I certainly see the value in having a delicious account. It was easy to get lost looking at what others had tagged.

Preloadr Masher

Preloadr is a neat little tool that offers free photo editing for Flickr. You just log in to Flickr and give Preloadr permission to access your account - you can then choose an image to crop, rotate or flip. You can also adjust the zoom level, scale your image and add text. The drop-down menus provide yet more options: blur, sharpen, contrast, color correction, graduation curve, auto-contrast, grayscale, inverse, swirl and granulation. If you’re a Flickr Pro user, you can then save your modified image and replace the old one - if you’ve got a free account, Preloadr will upload the edited file as a new image.

Interesting Technology

I don't know if this counts but I like Yahoo Groups. I belong to a couple of groups in which we communicate back and forth about something we all have in common. I find it extremely helpful in gathering information. Talking with other folks about a topic will get you more information or might help you think about something in a different light.

Flickr

Flickr is the best thing since Scrapbooking. I think it's actually better than scrapbooking. I have friends who post pictures of their families which I enjoy visiting. They get creative with the picture descriptions and make slideshows . I would love to have a flickr site to post pictures..however, much like scrapbooking..you have to remember to actually TAKE pictures. ;-)

Lifelong Learning

I believe in Lifelong Learning. I believe in education.. I believe that everyone needs to educate themselves either thru traditional classroom/virtual means inwhich the end result is a piece of paper such as a degree. However, there is so much more to being educated than just having a piece of paper..it's a good way to assist yourself in finding employment..but if you truly want to be an educated person you need to be a lifelong learner. You need to take advantage of every opportunity to learn..Learn & Play is one of those opportunities.

Viewing problems as challenges is both the hardest and easiest for me. Once I get past "freak out" mode then my mind moves on to "I can do this" mode. However, I must endure and make it thru the "freak out" mode in order for me to move to..ok, what's next?

Beginning My Journey

OK.. it is almost week #4 and I finally figured out that I am not doing this quite right. This has definitely been a learning experience...so, that 's a good thing! I enjoyed setting up my blog.
